The Pain of writing.

“Big things have small beginnings."

David in the movie Prometheus. This line has stuck in my head.

Start small.

Big things will come.

Have you ever felt the weight of a blank page, mocking your attempts at writing?

Starting Twitter I noticed quickly that I have three big problems.

  • How to write.

  • What to write.

  • How to get people to read.

How to write.

My first language is Finnish.

Speaking in English has always been easier than writing in English.

First tweet I made:

I tweeted like this for the first week. Noticing quickly it is not working.

I needed to learn how to write in my own way and style.

“Endless well of emotion and experiences.”

Solution is simple.

My life is full of emotional stories, failures, wins, losses, and ups and downs.

Write about my own life. I made a list of the things I know.

Four points:

  • Addiction

  • Self-improvement

  • Sports

  • Weight loss

Repurposing my material around these four points.

Still, I needed to learn how to write.

Grammar and spelling can be checked.

People who have studied English for years are light years ahead.

How to bridge the gap?

Big realization.

Youtube is a social media like Twitter.

Youtube shorts are like regular tweets.

Long videos are like threads and a newsletter.

Short sentences will have the same impact as short videos.

Short videos/short sentences have to be:

  • Hooking

  • Emotional

  • Surprising

  • Valuable

  • Story

On Writing Well

No shortcuts. You still have to do research, study, and practice writing skills.

I found a great book on writing.

On Writing Well by William Zinsser.

Main points of the book for me:

  • Write for your younger self

  • Write like a kid could read it

  • Focus on simplicity

  • Show don't tell

  • Cut unnecessary words.

  • Create own style

  • Write with passion

  • Read fiction and non-fiction

Checklist.

Every single tweet goes through this list.

Twitter will give you feedback.

If a tweet did good I would expand on it.

Simple.

Short impactful writing.

I am fascinated by telling a story with the least amount of words.

Flash fiction.

Concise storytelling that delivers a powerful punch in a limited space.

  • Brevity, focus

  • Efficiency, impact

  • Experimentation, creativity

  • Open-endedness

  • Popularity, challenges

  • Powerful punch

  • Engagement, creativity

I love movies.

Tweeting like it is a movie.

Short movie.

Using your experience as content.

Don't tell me that my life is boring and I have nothing to talk about.

Nonsense. I don't want to hear it.

Everybody has failures, heartbreak, loss, dreams, disappointment…

The list goes on.

Write the pain points of your life.

Trauma.

People will relate.

Growth in Twitter.

Almost 1k followers.

Writing short works.

Long form is necessary.

Growth on Twitter is…

Tale to be told on another day.
